Giants put the heat on Arizona; Bonds rests aching tooth
07.19.04 (10:43 pm) [edit]
Giants 6, D-backs 1 F
The Giants needed no help from Barry Bonds as they squared off against the senior circuits worst team, the Arizona Diamonbacks, who came in with a miserable record of 31-62 and a 7-game losing streak, as the Giants handily beat the D-backs 6-1. Bonds had a root canal early in the day and was advised not to play, but is expected to be back in the lineup tomorrow against the "Big Unit" Randy Johnson.
I know I was ripping on Brett Tomko yesterday, but it's only natural. Tomko (5-5) picked up the win, allowing 1 run through 7 1/3 innings. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Steve Sparks (3-6) got roughed up allowing 5 runs through 6. I still think the Giants need to get another starting pitcher however, as a rotation with Tomko and Hermanson in the 4th and 5th slots is not enough.
Kris Benson would be a nice pickup, but only at the right price. No way should the Giants give up one of their two top pitching prospects in Matt Cain and Merkin Valdez. These two youngsters should be fixtures in the Giants rotation for years to come and at no cost.
After today's victory the Giants run their record to 52-42, 1 game ahead of the San Diego Padres for the NL Wild Card. Sophomore Jerome Williams will take on Randy Johnson tomorrow in the desert, a 6:35pm pacific standard start.

Bonds hits #682 in a Giant blow
07.18.04 (11:39 pm) [edit]
Barry Bonds hit his 24th HR of the season in the top of the 9th inning to extend the San Francisco Giants lead over the Colorado Rockies to 9-6, seemingly on their way to take their 3rd game in the 4 game set in the mile high city of Denver. However, in a not-so-stunning turn-around, Matt Herges coughed up the lead giving up 2 tators - including a majestic shot off the bat off Preston Wilson - and 4 runs overall in a crushing blow, to give the Rockies the 10-9 victory.
Herges (4-4) took home the loss with Harikkala (4-1) nothing up the win despite giving up a pair of homers in the top of the 9th, including Bonds' #682nd of his illustrious career.
Bonds' batting average now stands at a major league leading .371 and an eye-popping, inhumane .628. He finished the day 3-for-4 with an IBB, HR, and two singles. There is just no stopping him right now as he is in a league of his own on another planet. He is a lock to win his 4th consecutive MVP and don't even try to argue against it cause I will tear you up, with all his #'s backing it up.
Anyway, the Los Angeles Dodgers keep on winning and it is getting annoying as they up their lead over the Giants to 2 1/2. I'm sure the Giants will leap-frog them soon in the standings and the Dodgers will fade, but at the moment the Giants have the wild-card lead over the Chicago Cubs by 1 game.
Tomorrow it's off to the desert as we take on the Arizona Diamondbacks for a 2 game set. It will be weak ass Brett Tomko going up against Steve Sparks.
The question remains how will they respond to a demoralizing loss in the mile high city, crushing the hearts of even the most optimistic San Franciscan faithful.

About Schmidt
07.17.04 (11:51 pm) [edit]
Giants 4, Rockies 0 F
Jason Schmidt continued his dominance over the senior circuit, tossing 8 shut-out innings against the Colorado Rockies in the rarified air of Denver, Colorado while striking out 8 and limiting the offensive juggernaut once known as the "Blake Street Bombers" to 4 hits on the night.
Schmidt (12-2), won for his 12th consecutive decision and is undefeated in his last 16 starts. Schmidt lowered his ERA to a dental floss thin 2.35 ERA, matching his ERA from the 2003 campaign in which he finished 17-6 with a 2.35 ERA.
Aaron Cook (4-4) was the tough luck loser, allowing 3 runs over 7 1/3 innings while only allowing 2 hits.
The big blow came in the top of the 8th inning when Barry Bonds hit a line shot for a 2-run double to break open the game, making it 4-0. Bonds finished 1 for 2 on the day with 2 intentional walks, upping his batting average to .364 in another spectacular season by Bonds.
Tomorrow the same two teams meet for the finale of the four game series. Hermanson goes for the Giants and opposes Benero of the Rockies.

Bonds splashes #661 in win; surpasses Mays
04.14.04 (2:12 am) [edit]
Giants 4, Brewers 2
Barry Bonds hit home run #661 into McCovey cove in the bottom of the 7th inning with 2 outs off Brewers pitcher B. Ford to spark the San Francisco Giants to a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers tuesday night in San Francisco.
With the home run - the 29th splash hit by Bonds alone - Bonds passed Willie Mays for sole possession of 3rd on the all time home run list with 661. The home run was estimated at 458 ft., certainly an epic towering shot into the Cove. It was Vintage Bonds.
Lost in this madness was Marquis Grissom's 2 home runs and Dustin Hermanson's (1-0) superb performance giving up only 1 run in 5 2/3rd's innings and allowing a measly 3 hits while striking out 6. Chris Capuano (1-1) took home the loss.
The Giants and Brewers square-off in the finale of the 3 game series as the Giants look to hand the Brewers the sweep. Wayne Franklin goes for the Giants with Wes Obermueller going for the Brewers. It will be a 12:35pm PST ball game.

660 atlast! Giants win
04.13.04 (8:44 pm) [edit]
Giants 7, Brewers 5 F
Barry Bonds hit home run #660 to tie Willy Mays for third on the all time home run list to spark the San Francisco Giants to a 7-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in the home opener at newly named SBC Park in San Francisco.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the 5th, Bonds crushed a 3-1 offering from Matt Kinney (0-1) with two men on base and deposited the ball into Mc Covey Cove to hand the Giants the lead, and the Giants would not look back as they would go on to win 7-5.
Jerome Williams (1-1) notched up the victory by going 6 innings while allowing 4 runs - 3 which were earned.
Of course the story of the game was Bonds hitting #660. Willy Mays greeted Bonds near home plate and presented him the olympic torch with 25 diamonds.
Barry Bonds will go for home run #661 today against Chris Capuano while Dustin Hermanson goes for the Giants.
NOTES
Bonds ended up going 3-3 with a HR, 2B and a BB. He is now 9 for 22 on the year, with a batting average over .400.

Giants salvage a win
04.12.04 (5:11 pm) [edit]
GIANTS 6, PADRES 3 F
The San Francisco Giants used a five-run inning in the top of the 8th to overcome a three-run deficit on their way to a 6-3 victory over the San Diego Padres in the finale of a three game series.
The Giants avoided the sweep with 6 solid innings from Brett Tomko to go along with 3 scoreless innings from the bullpen. Jason Christiansen (1-0), took home the win despite a shaky inning. Jay Witasick (0-1), was charged with the loss, giving up 2 runs while not retiring a single batter.
Neife Perez and Pedro Feliz had 2 RBI's a piece and Barry Bonds went 1-for-3 with 2 walks.
The Giants open up play at SBC Park today when they take on the Mikwaukee Brewers, where Barry Bonds hopes to hit that illusive 660th home run to tie Willie Mays for 3rd on the all-time home run list.
It will be the Giants RHP Jerome Williams (0-1), taking on Matt Kinney (0-0).

GIANTS 4, PADRES 6 F
The San Diego Padres came back from a 4-1 deficit by scoring five un-answered runs on their way to a 6-4 victory.
Scott Linebrink (1-0), was credit with the win pitching an inning of relief, while Jim Brower (0-1), was charged with the loss.
The Giants would leave the bases loaded in the 9th inning with Barry Bonds on deck.
Brett Tomko takes on Jake Peavy sunday at 8pm ET on the nationally telivised ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.

Bonds, Giants robbed
04.09.04 (9:55 pm) [edit]
GIANTS 3, PADRES 4 F
Barry Bonds was robbed on what could have potentially been home run #660 when Jay Payton leaped up over the center field wall and pulled the ball back in for the out.
The Giants also blew two saves, one in the 9th inning and the other in the 10th to lose the game 3-4.
Due to the fakeness of the game, I will not have an extended report.
The Giants take on the Padres once again on Saturday night, and Bonds is due to homer anytime now.

Clemens stiffles Bonds, Giants
04.08.04 (2:36 am) [edit]
GIANTS 1, ASTROS 10 F
Roger Clemens (1-0) pitched 7 dominant innings of shutout ball allowing only 1 hit while striking out 9 on the way to a 10-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants avoiding the three-game sweep on Wednesday night.
Clemens intentionally walked Barry Bonds in the first inning with an open base and struck him out looking on the following two at bats in the much anticipated showdown between two baseball greats. Bonds would finish the day 0-2 with a walk.
Jerome Williams (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up 5 runs in 6 innings against the Astros.
Jeff Kent, Jeff Bagwell, and the red-hot Richard Hidalgo lead the Astros in the 10-run explosion. Bagwell and Hidalgo each had a home run a piece while Kent contributed with 4 RBI's.
Ricky Stone pitched a perfect ninth to wrap up the game. The Giants took the series 2 out of 3. They head to San Diego on Thursday night where the Padres will open up play in the brand new PETCO Park. The Astros have the day off.
NOTES
You have to tip your cap to Roger Clemens. He is 41 years old but he sure looked atleast 10 years younger out there on his way to striking out 9 Giants in 7 innings. The Giants should still keep their heads up high as they took 2 out of 3 from the Astros on the road and without their Ace in Jason Schmidt.
Schmidt will pitch in a minor league game Saturday in Visalia, CA. He is schedule to throw around 80 pitches, and this will decide whether or not he will return from the DL and start on April 16th at SBC Park against the LA Dodgers.
The Giants will take on David Wells and the Padres at 7:00pm on Thursday night as the Padres open up their beautiful new ballpark in downtown San Diego. Bonds has never faced Wells, but I think this will be the day that Bonds hits #660 and ties Willie Mays for 3rd on the all-time home run list. Wells is the third-straight former Yankee pitcher the Giants face in as many days. So far: 1 and 1.

Pettitte bombed in Astros debut
04.07.04 (2:59 am) [edit]
Giants 7, Astros 5 F
RECAP
In his Astros debut, Andy Pettitte was shelled surrendering 6 earned runs and 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings at Minute Maid Park on tuesday night.
Neife Perez lead the San Francisco Giants offensively going 4 for 4 including two doubles and 4 RBI's; the biggest blow coming in the top of the 4th with 2 outs and the bases loaded when Perez cleared the bases with a double to give the Giants the lead and they would never look back on their way to their second victory in as many games.
Barry Bonds went 1 for 4 with an intentional walk and failed in his bid to hit home run #660.
The Houston Astros cut it close at the end, as they entered the 8th inning trailing 7-3 before scoring two runs on a Richard Hidalgo single to make it 7-5. They rallied to get two more runners on base in the 9th but the new interim-closer of the Giants, Matt Herges, was able to lock up the win by again getting Jeff Bagwell for the last out of the game. It is his second save in as many games.
Giants rookie pitcher Davis Aardsma (1-0) picked up the win pitching two score-less innings in his major league debut. Andy Pettitte (0-1) takes the loss.
The Giants will go for the sweep of the Astros on wednesday night with Roger Clemens making his Astros debut vs. Jerome Williams.
NOTES
It was a good victory for the Giants beating Andy Pettitte in his debut. First Oswalt, now Pettitte, and hopefully Clemens today will also fall victim to the Giants. A lot of baseball experts were writing the Giants off before the start of the season but the Giants have come out flushing through the gates winning the first two games against the Houston Astros whom many have predicted will make the World Series.
The Giants had 7 runs on 15 hits, none in which were home runs. I don't expect the Giants to hit many home runs this year as they have no legitimate home run hitter besides Barry Bonds. They'll have to itch and crawl to score runs, and try to get as many people on base for Barry Bonds.
Matt Herges will be a great fit as the Giants closer, he is one of the best relief pitchers that nobody knows about but he'll surely be known around the league before long. He is now 2 for 2 in save opportunities.
David Aardsma pitched two score-less innings to pick up the win. Of course, Aardsma was the Giants 1st round pick, and the 4th player to reach the majors from the 2003 MLB amateur draft. Aardsma will be a huge asset to the Giants bullpen this year.
Brett Tomko stinked. Pedro Feliz should start. And can't wait for Jason Schmidt to return from the DL and dominate.

Bonds hurts his back
03.10.04 (3:55 pm) [edit]
Barry Bonds, like a fine wine gets better with age. Unfortunately, he also gets more fragile with age.
Barry Bonds, rapidly approaching 40, missed today's Giants game vs. The A-Rod-less Texas Rangers after suffering a minor back injury during batting practice.
Bonds swung at a pitch, threw his bat down, then received treatment while flat on his back. He took one more swing before retiring to the trainer's room for the afternoon.
"It's just a stiffness that occurs from time to time," Giants trainer Stan Conte said. "He has no pain down his leg. It's really just an ache in his back. He's had this before."
Let's hope it is just a minor injury - as they are reporting - and that he is back on his feet depositing home run balls over the fence soon.

Giants face 3/5th's of Yankees X-Starting Rotation in 1st week
03.09.04 (10:48 pm) [edit]
|
Baseball season is just around the corner and you can't help to notice that the San Francisco Giants will face 3 X-Yankee pitchers in the first 4 games of the season. They open up the season @ Houston vs the Astros on Monday, April 5th against ace RHP Roy Oswalt. Tuesday the 6th they face the newest Astro, X-Yankee LHP Andy Pettitte in his much anticipated debut after signing a lofty contract. Wednesday the 7th (on a nationally televised game on ESPN/ 7pmET) they take on another X-Yankee, RHP Roger Clemens, who should be retired by now but decided to come back for one more season. Finally, on thursday the 8th the Giants are guests in the opening of the San Diego Padres new ballpark, PETCO Park. Opposing the Giants will be X-Yankee, LHP David Wells. That makes it 3 X-Yankees in a row.

Sheffield jams thumb
03.08.04 (8:25 pm) [edit]
|
New all-star Gary Sheffield, right fielder for the New York Yankees could be out up to 2-3 months after jamming his thumb. Of course this is the worst case scenario, if it were to be broken, which would require surgery. The best-case scenario would be that the right fielder could return for spring training games. IF he is indeed out for 2-3 months, along with the Yankees starting pitching woes, the Red Sox might be the favorites to be in 1st place for atleast the first two months of the season. There is just no stopping the two-headed dragon of Martinez & Schilling.

It was just reported that the Chicago Cubs have signed the 4-time Cy Young winner, RHP Greg Maddux. The deal is being reported as a 3-year, 24 million dollar contract. The Cubs should now be the favorites to represent the National League in the 2004 World Series - against none other that the New York Yankees.

Newsday is reporting that an Alex Rodriguez for Alfonso Soriano deal will be announced within a few days.
The deal is not official as of yet, but a source has told Newsday that both sides remain confident everything will be finalized within a few days.
This move would go down as a big punch to the stomach for all the Boston Red Sox fan world-wide, and the steal of the century after the Red Sox were so close to landing Alex Rodriguez themselves. One could only imagine how a Red Sox fan must feel to have Alex Rodriguez stolen from them to their bitterest rival- the New York Yankees.

Giants make Maddux bid
02.13.04 (1:55 pm) [edit]
So maybe there is somebody who listens to prayers up there in heaven. 2 hours after posting my birthday wish on this blog, it was reported that the Giants are after future hall-of-hamer RHP Greg Maddux. Amazing how things work out huh. If you have been following my blog, I have been praying that the Giants get Maddux, and now they might actually do just that.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
The San Francisco Chronicle's Henry Schulman reports that the Giants have entered the hunt for Greg Maddux. Sources told Schulman that the Giants have already begun discussing dollar figures with Maddux's agent.
As early as last spring, Maddux expressed a desire to come to San Francisco's pitcher-friendly ballpark if he and the Braves parted ways. He also made it clear he wants to pitch close to his new home in Southern California.
The Giants have had a hand in Maddux negotiations all winter. With spring training just days away and Maddux still unsigned, the talks apparently have accelerated to the point that owner Peter Magowan has gotten more involved.
However, the Giants are banking on the 37-year-old pitcher's desire to extend his career with them even if they don't offer the biggest contract because of the ballpark and their consistency in reaching the postseason.
Maddux would be a valuable acquisition if the Giants pull it off, aside from victories and innings he might provide. Besides the attention he would bring as he nears his 300th win, Maddux could help develop young pitchers such as Jerome Williams, Jesse Foppert, Kevin Correia and Merkin Valdez.
